LOL I have those at my cottage and they scare the crap out of me. I don’t see them a lot though… they’re called wolf spiders and they don’t bite… I hope…

Ok….I’m never going to live in Oklahoma! lol…Even though it was about an 8.5 on the freaky scale, it was still a fairly touching tale.

Actually, that was prolly a male and female who had babies.

Thats what that one that looked like it had huge butt had, those were babies.

That one in your garage was probably running from the female, considering the females eat the males, in fear the male will eat the babies.

So that bou probably ran away again, or got eated.

Actually, if that is a wolf spider, and it sure looks like one, they do bite. The bite is relatively harmless aside from the being painful part …I mean you won’t die or lose a limb.

Nice of you not to kill it. It takes a real man to be fully evolved enough to have compassion. That being said, what State or City do you live in? I’m thinking of relocating and I may base my decision where, in part, on it being a place that does NOT have such creatures roaming around. I’ll take snakes, any day, rather than that thing.

Btw.. the other spider did not have eggs on it’s back. Those are actual babies:

I believe that spider in your basement was a SHE spider. ;) Males have enlarged pedipalps; yours didn’t seem to.

wolf spider, they do bite and hurt and are very common. that one is about half the size of the ones we have around our farm and maintenance facility. their babies live on their backs so if you see them in your house, kill them or toss them outside (if you can).

I let one go once and a week later there were 12 of them under a bathroom mat next to my shower…

glenn

Posted July 16th, 2008 at 1:24 am

those r wolf spiders and non venamiose they eat small bugs. very harmless i grew up in Arizona whare they get even bigger but not as big as thier very close cousin the tarantula also non venimouse. and spider #2 was a female and its back was coverd with about 100 babies already born. thier very good to keep around in gardens and garages for they tend to keep them clean of all other insects. i was bitt once made a (H E double L) of a not but dint hurt at all just i bitt sore for a day not like a ant bite or bee.

glenn

Posted July 16th, 2008 at 1:31 am

oh one more thing. LMAO some food for thought when you threw the poor guy out (beings they R nonvenimose and eat just about any other bug they can get ahold of) think of the other critters that moved in now that Fido’s gone :) – and thier nonagresive

The female spider you saw at the end didn’t have eggs on her back, those are babies that already hatched. If you touched her back, they all jump off. It usually results in all of them dying, though. =(

Hey Zack, great video. Gorgeous spider! I am a spider ecologist – I study them and do classroom presentations with them!! Your little friend there was definitely an impressively large female wolf spider, as was the 2nd one, and other people were right – she had her babies on her back. And no Javier, it was not a Brown Recluse – sigh…any time a spider is brown people think it’s a brown recluse – happens all the time, frustrating for me. Just wondered where you are located? I ask because I’m curious if it might be a Carolina wolf spider (not from Carolina). They get particularly large, and I’m kinda jealous that you’ve got them around your place. =] Wolf spiders will only bite in self-defense, as in life-or-death situations, and it shouldn’t cause much of a reaction. Not dangerous. Sorry it was so scary for you. Good luck, and may your garage be as spiderless as possible! Let me know if you have any other spider questions. –The Spider Chick

I am ok with spiders, its only when one gets on me that I have a problem. After watching your video, I feel like calling the pest control guy so he can come a spray our garage just in case. I know I’ve seen black widows in the garage before.

I would have also taken the time to save the big UGLY spider, but i would have released it closer to my home to see if he could find his way back home.

EW! I have THE biggest phobia of spiders! Of any size! I pretty much have a heart attack when I see a spider smaller than an ants leg….No way I could handle that thing!! I freak when I see spiders!!! Eww and the one with the huge back, If those were babies……. what if you squished it? Like 100 mini spiders would attack you!!! AHHHHHHHHHH hahaha I’m freakin myself out lol

I’m a massive arachnophobe. I had brown recluse spiders in my suite when I first moved in, they get into EVERYTHING – all my boxes, drawers, pockets of clothing, bookshelves… ICK! I can’t move ANYTHING without finding a spider…. now I guess it’s too cold and they’re hibernating or something somewhere. I still see the babies once in a while, but I’ve been terrified of these brown ones (have you ever looked up “Brown Recluse Spider Bites” on youtube?! SICK) … now that I see that shit, WTF! Never going to Oklahoma!

And… babies LIVING on the female’s back!? I thought I’d seen everything with spiders… helllllllllllllll no, that spider would’ve been sprayed & torched ala Arachnophobia, STAT!

I caught a huge spider once in a house I lived in, wanted to know what kind it was, while I was googling it, it built a web in the gatorade bottle I had captured it in, and I kind of grew attached, I kept it and fed it random bugs, flies, ants, other spiders, it was actually all quite interesting. The spider I caught was a hobo spider :

wolf spiders will bite the crap out of you…and they actually “take a bite” and eat it, while injecting venom, on the hope that it’ll kill ya, then it can completely devour human flesh.

is there a god ?

The second spider you found was a female, but those weren’t eggs. Female spiders carry their young on their back, and that’s what you saw. Eventually the mother dies and the babies eat her.

Do the planet a favor and kill them both with some kind of bug spray or smashing device.

What the hell is wrong with you? Why wouldn’t you set that thing on fire as soon as you discovered it’s hideous existence? You think those things want to live? Look at them! They’d be begging for you to kill them if their awful bodies could produce human words.

You’ve gotta do more “giant garage spider” type videos. They don’t necessarily have to be about garage spiders… but they should be videos.. and they should be posted to your web site. Thanks – loved the car wash video too btw.

I believe that is a dark fishing spider and not a wolf spider. They look very similar, but the DFS is a lot larger: http://www.uark.edu/ua/arthmuse/dolomede.html. DFS are in the nursery spider family. They are similar to wolf spiders in that they ambush their prey. According to the website: “Nursery-web spiders have eight eyes arranged in two rows of four each, whereas wolf spiders have eight eyes arranged in three rows, with the two eyes of the middle row by far the largest.” So if you get close enough. BTW, I think it is awesome that you didn’t kill it.
